Attending the recent CDISC TMF conference in Milan left me energized and inspired by the rapid pace of change in the industry. One major theme that stood out was the ongoing evolution of TMF standards. As organizations adapt to new regulatory expectations, they’re not just tightening compliance; they’re also streamlining processes and enhancing data integrity. This drive toward smarter, more efficient TMF management is clear. Digital solutions and the use of AI are both increasingly seen as essential tools, enabling teams to handle documentation with greater agility and confidence.
Technology is only part of the story. The conference buzzed with conversations about the power of collaboration. Sponsors, CROs, and technology providers were eager to share best practices and foster open communication, recognizing that teamwork is vital to tackling common challenges like maintaining TMF completeness. These collaborative efforts are breaking down silos and paving the way for more robust, reliable documentation processes. The human side of TMF management was front-and-center in the discussions, reminding us that people, alongside technology and process, drive positive change.
One topic raised by Jackie Petty and me sparked deep reflection: Are we missing the real story behind TMF metrics? Most organizations track completeness, timeliness, and quality well, but a study-level focus can obscure recurring issues and risks that only emerge when viewed more broadly. That’s where shifting to a portfolio perspective comes in: moving from isolated reporting to pattern recognition and proactive control.
This approach enables us to identify systemic issues across studies, detect risks earlier, and align operational realities with leadership decisions. On a practical level, processing metrics demonstrate not just volume but control and scalability, heatmaps reveal where readiness breaks down, and quality review trends help uncover root causes. Ultimately, adopting a portfolio lens transforms TMF management from reactive to proactive, unlocking true value and driving continuous improvement for teams and organizations alike.
Thank you to everyone who shared their time and knowledge in Milan!
